Pittsburgh
Here PITT, compassed by hills and streams around,
Compactly built within its narrow bound,
Stands gloomily magnificent in mantling smoke,
The western workshop, where useful arts convoke;
Here chiming hammer and loud puffing steam,
The rattling dray and the thundering team;
A bustling crowd with hurried pace,
And oft brown industry's sooty face,
Are seen and heard throughout the busy place.
That was written in 1810, when Pittsburgh began to rise as a manufacturing center and its population began to rise dramatically. (I'm taking a class)
